Melinda R. Saran
chair of the Gender Bias/Work Related Issues Committee, is Vice Dean for Student Affairs at the University at Buffalo Law School. Ms. Saran continues to teach a course on Disability Law and a colloquium at the Law School. A graduate of the Nichols School, Ms. Saran attended the University of Rochester where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, cum laude, and a Master of Public Health degree. She received her Juris Doctor degree from the University at Buffalo Law School.
An active member of the New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Legal Education and Admission to the Bar and the Committee on Issues Affecting People with Disabilities, Ms. Saran was appointed to a three year term as chair of the Committee in June 2004. She has been an active member of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York (WBASNY) serving as co-chair of the Amicus Committee. She is a past president of the Western New York Chapter of WBASNY where she has served as Secretary, State Director, and for many years on the Judiciary Committee. She serves on the Board of the Volunteer Lawyers Project, Inc. and the Western New York Law Center. Ms. Saran is also a member and past director of the Bar Association of Erie County, and a member of many membership organizations including the Women Lawyers of Western New York, the Collegiate Coalition of Disability Advocates, and the Niagara Frontier Center for Independent Living, Inc. (NFCIL). She is a member of the Child and Family Support Council of the Mental Health Associations of Erie County and the Human Rights Committee of the Summit Educational Program. Ms. Saran is a frequent lecturer and trainer on education and disability law issues for educators, attorneys, individuals with disabilities, parents of children with disabilities, and other professionals. She has received many awards, including the Founder’s Award from NFCIL in 1996, the Faculty Award from the Law School’s Class of 2000, the Mental Health Association Volunteer Services Award in 2000, the “Friend of Gateway-Longview” award in May 2002, and the Harvest Honors award from Parent Network of WNY in 2004.
